Google’s Change to Display URL Policy
Written by alain on March 2, 2009
Google has made a slight change to its Adwords policy which took place on the 24th February. This isn’t a major change but it will influence those who are displaying URL’s as ’sub domains.’
They are basically insisting that all ads within the same ad group must display the same top-level domain.
To make it easier to explain, let’s use and example where the main domain we’re using is: “Golf.com.” Now, the keyword we’re bidding on is “improve swing”
Previously if we wanted to create a more effective ad which would in most cases increase CTR’s we could create a Display URL like this:
…where the correct sub domain usage would look like this:
In other words: the following group of Display URL’s would comply with Google’s new regulations, because all of them contain the same top-level domain “Golf.com.”:
However, you would not be allowed to batch the following display URL’s in a single ad group, since the top-level domains don’t match:
Therefore, if you are using multiple Display URL’s you should go over your Adwords account to make sure that some of your ads are not suspended.
